Cape Town, Drakenstein Valley, Gansbaai / To the Cape Peninsula & beyond

Swapping game drives for farm life and dusty savannahs for bustling streets, experience a different side of South Africa’s west – wildlife still guaranteed.

King of Africa’s urban jungles, the Mother City is where the journey begins with One&Only Cape Town acting as basecamp. Hidden in the shadow of Table Mountain, this vibrant city invites scavenger hunts of all shapes and sizes, ticking off the essential sights from historic gardens and street art alleys, to nature trails from the mountain to the sea. Then, the winelands are given a kid-approved makeover at Babylonstoren, a working wine and fruit farm in the Drakenstein Valley. Getting their hands dirty by helping out with the farm animals, harvesting veg from the gardens and making their own bread.

Grootbos Garden Lodge rounds off the trip. The Marine Big 5 here aren’t the only things to prompt involuntary squeals of delight though. Noses are pressed against the glass on an airborne whale watching expedition, fairies are sought in the 1,500-year-old Milkwood forest, and new friends are made during a game of football at the Grootbos Sports Foundation.

Itinerary highlights:

  • Paddle board your way through the calm canals of V&A waterfront, while the braver ones navigate their way via a map to Sea Point Promenade
  • Take the funicular to Cape Point Lighthouse before hiking the beach of Table Mountain National Park with its shipwrecks, secret coves and rock pools
  • Explore the food hub of the south peninsula, Noordhoek Farm Village, and tuck into their renowned ice cream
  • Hike in the hills with a picnic or go canoeing on Babylonstoren farm’s dam
  • Join the gardeners on a fruit picking expedition and cycle around the vineyards and orchards
  • Take a private light aircraft to whale watch from the air
  • Visit the Grootbos Sports Foundation and enjoy a game of football with the local children
  • A lesser known hidden gem, spend time with the penguin colony at Betty’s Bay

Cape Town

Breakfast on Table Mountain sets the tone for the day before returning to sea level to paddle board the V&A waterfront, with the bolder souls even trying their hand at navigating the group to Sea Point Promenade. The next day sees the city left behind as you make your way to the peninsula and Kalk Bay. Today is animal abundant with the likes of seals and penguins being spotted before moving on in search of the Cape 5 – ostrich, baboons, mountain zebra, bontebok and tortoise. Back in town, little foodies try their hand at sushi making in a masterclass in One&Only Cape Town’s Nobu restaurant.

The winelands prove to not just be for the grown-ups as the vineyards of Babylonstoren become home for three nights. Here there’s a hands on approach in the likes of the garden where children help out by harvesting fruit and veg, and in the kitchen where they help the bakers knead and cook tasty loaves. Morning bike rides lead to canoeing around the property’s dam and mountain drives in the afternoons unveil the area’s history as the sun sets. Meanwhile, in the scent room, essential oils dance together while you create perfumes and creams to take home as a memento.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is the finishing point, but not before a stop along the way to visit the over 6,000-strong colony of penguins at the hidden gem of Betty’s Bay, followed by a picnic on the beach. Don’t leave your farming hat behind though, because there’s plenty to get stuck into at Grootbos; think feeding the farm animals, collecting eggs for breakfast and picking flowers from the garden. There’s plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities too, including ticking off the Marine Big 5.

Proving that whale watching doesn’t have to be done the conventional land-based way, take to the skies to spot the gentle giants breaching the glassy ocean surface from the window of a private aircraft, guaranteed to earn some collective “oohs” and “ahhs”. Once feet are firmly back on the ground, head into Milkwood forest to hunt for fairies between its twisting trees and explore the surrounding area on horseback. Over at the Grootbos Sports Foundation, new buddies for life are made while playing a friendly game of football with the local children.
