South Africa / Cheetah Plains Private Game Reserve

Cutting-edge in both design and concept, Cheetah Plains ushers in a new era for the safari experience with its almost-silent wildlife experiences courtesy of unobtrusive electric jeeps.

With a bold, contemporary Afro-minimalist style that marks it out from other safari lodges in Africa, this super-intimate property is in a prime spot for spotting the Big Five – the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in which it is set borders Kruger National Park, and there are no fences. Having your own private game vehicle – zero-emission Toyota Land Cruisers with solar-charged Tesla batteries, bolstered suspension and heated seats – affords the ultimate in comfort, eco-friendliness and personalised safaris. Allowed off-road, they are virtually noiseless so ensure that you see animals behaving in a natural way.

Designed to be as generous as possible, there are just three sumptuous Plains Houses and each are exclusive-use hideaways featuring four detached bedrooms (two of which interconnect). With the immediate feeling of connecting with raw nature, kick back by your heated lap-pool, sample the delights of your own fine wine gallery and dine alfresco by the fire. All come with the services of a host, private chef, wellness therapist, field guide and tracker.

Travel notes:

  • A trio of exclusive-use houses, each with four bedrooms sleeping up to eight people
  • Expansive open-plan lounges and living spaces
  • Ideal for families and multi-generational travel; minimum age is 6 years
  • An undeniably modern style, where hard concrete, metal and stone is softened by locally made furniture and art
  • Twice-daily game drives: early morning and late afternoon
  • Specialised photographic safaris and birding safaris with professional tuition are also available

When to visit South Africa

A year round destination, but expect cooler weather in the Eastern and Western Capes during winter, between June and August. Mpumalanga stays warm year round with temperatures, humidity and rainfall all increasing in the summer months between October and March. The whales return to the waters around Hermanus from July to November, and the spring months of August and September are particularly colourful along the Garden Route.

The prime time for game viewing is generally the drier winter and spring months from April to September when animals frequent the waterholes. During the wetter summer months between October and March, animals can still be viewed but are more widely dispersed – from December to February there may be more sightings of newborn animals.
