Italy / Borgo Egnazia

Watch video

Passing through beautiful bucolic olive groves sits a citadel-inspired playground of whitewashed stone walls; inside, content couples and fun-loving families coexist in harmony.

There are few things more Italian than a family-run labour of love that took over a decade to design and complete; however, considering the nature of Borgo Egnazia it is no surprise its origins were quintessentially Apulian. Easily mistaken for a quaint village among the centuries-old olive groves of the Itria Valley, it defies the traditional conceptions of a resort hotel to deliver an experience of Italy so authentic it’s easy to forget there’s a world outside of this Mediterranean microcosm.

A sense of place

A labyrinthine place where the scent of jasmine floats throughout stone pathways, this marriage of high-end bliss and rural charm proves opposites do in fact attract. In a feat of considered design, during the summer months La Corte becomes an exclusive adults-only enclave (sorry no children under 13 years during this period) while Il Borgo and its central piazza remains a hub of family-friendly merriments.

In pursuit of…

…the soul of southern Italy. Authentic aesthetic aside, the scents, flavours and lifestyle here are inextricably Mediterranean. Earthy rosemary and fresh lemon permeate the air as proud Puglian staff bustle around the village streets like local residents, searching for that specially requested item to place in the room of some new arrivals. And at Michelin-starred Due Camini, Chef Domingo Schingaro serves dishes born from memories of his Pugliese childhood home. We’re not sure there’s anywhere better to fulfil the Italian concept of buon retiro, which is periodically retreating to a good place in order to charge your batteries.

Beyond family-friendly

Il Borgo is home to the main piazza, family pool and drop-in kids’ clubs where little ones become budding chefs and partake in workshops inspired by Puglian fairy tales. The village square is the heartbeat; picture fiestas, live music, cooking stations, Fasano-style barbecues and high energy street acts. For toddlers who can’t be tamed, dining at made-to-measure kids-only Da Frisella restaurant fulfils all cravings of independence.

On location

With a spa like Vair, a dedication to physical and mental well-being is a given. Treatments are an earthy mix of locally produced olive oil and focus on achieving a renewed sense of happiness as well as restoration. Egnazia is also currently the first hotel in the world to be partnered with Blue Zones Retreats, practicing the lifestyle habits of some of the longest-living people on the planet. Outside its walls waits one of the country’s most prestigious golf courses within putting distance, where leisurely rounds are followed by cocktails and just-caught freshly cooked shellfish at the cliffside beach club.

Wake up here

Trying to decide which is your ideal roost is quite the dilemma. Think sumptuous townhouses, most with Arabian gardens and private rooftop terraces; and exquisite villas boasting expansive living areas, wrap-around balconies and private pool for morning swims. While every room is a dreamy study in layering white and cream linens, the true taste of exclusivity is in Borgo’s top villas. Ideal for extended family, they encompass three floors of lofty rooms paved with cool stone floors to offset the heat, a private courtyard, and don’t forget the traditional farmhouse-style kitchen, where a dedicated massaia prepares fresh bread and secret family recipes.

A Carrier curation

While Borgo Egnazia leaves guests little reason to venture beyond its walls, those who choose to, do so in classic Italian style; think exploring the unspoilt nature via winding roads in a vintage convertible. Setting off with no destination in mind means detours through local towns become lazy afternoons passed sipping espresso and grazing on cicchetti. A personal local advisor is always on hand to orchestrate anything from pasta and pottery making to discovering private beaches.

When to visit Italy

Italy is a year round destination especially for city breaks, with a largely temperate climate with regional variations. Summers are hot especially from Rome southwards, whilst spring and autumn are mild. Winter in the south is warmer and drier than in the northern and central areas which can be much colder with snow fall in the mountainous regions.
