At the centre of Mexico’s Mayakoba development rests a resort masquerading as a wildlife and nature reserve. Swapping indulgent glamour for barefoot luxe living, this is a wild place where foliage outnumbers buildings – the secluded 129 stylish suites and collection of private residences are built around natural lagoons and hide among the greenery. Rosewood Mayakoba sprawls out along a mile long stretch of powdery, white beach, content to let its surroundings bask in the spotlight.
Travel notes:
Renowned for its luxury resorts, the Mayakoba region on Riviera Maya is a secluded Mexican microcosm situated between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Complete with its own plaza, chapel, cooking school and shops, this pocket of calm is private and exclusive without sacrificing on location – outside there are wondrous ruins, entire lost cities and the world’s second largest coral reef. Tulum is only an hour away.
…an unexpected connection to nature. This Rainforest Alliance certified resort merges with its lush setting and encourages guests to do the same. Extremely keen not to offer the same in-your-face wild experience of a safari, the touches here are instead discreet; indoor/outdoor living is a lifestyle choice adopted so voraciously that the effect is imperceptible in its seamlessness. Over water bungalows (expect to arrive by boat) jut out over the lagoon, while outside its walls pilgrimages to nearby sacred cenotes showcase a natural wonder that can only be found in this region.
The Rosewood Explorers Club and captivating activities here focus on engaging children in the rich heritage of the Mexican Riviera and its immediate surrounds. Eager-to-learn little ones will love the daily 10am biologist-led eco-boat tour through the meandering lagoons. From birds, turtles and iguanas, as well as a host of other flora and fauna, there’s no shortage of wildlife for them to marvel at.
Using its sprawling nature to its advantage, Rosewood’s beachfront adults-only hideaway, Aquí Me Quedo, is a vibrant hangout spot designed for undisturbed enjoyment – three of the six resort pools are smoothly stashed here. True escape however is found in Sense, A Rosewood Spa®. Hidden among the jungle greenery on its own intimate island, it offers up down-to-earth therapies steeped in Mayan tradition and transformative journeys in the Kuxtal Sensory Garden.
Suites here are strikingly modern in design, where a conscious use of indigenous materials and embracing of the outdoors mean robust wooden pillars lead to private bath gardens complete with open-air shower and heated plunge pool. For bigger gatherings, the private two-, three- and six-bedroom lagoon villas adopt pared-down minimalism (spot on for the natural setting) and are airy, light residences; offering a home-away-from-home experience that melds with Mayakoba’s signature feeling of rustic luxury.
Adopting the brand's "A Sense of Place" philosophy, a private tour of the 1,500 year old city of Coba is the best way to experience Mayan culture away from the crowds of Chichén Itzá and Tulum. An ancient archaeological site hidden deep in the Yucatan jungle and accessible only by winding vegetation lined paths that end in crumbling temples, this is the sort of place where an indiscernible atmosphere alive with the energy of its past lingers in the air.
Riviera Maya is enjoyable year-round, but October to May is generally the most pleasant time to visit. Humidity is at its highest from July to September, with occasional showers more likely to occur on the Gulf Coast. November to May are the most popular months to visit Baja Peninsula, characterised by warm, generally dry days, whilst July to October tends to be hotter and more humid with the possibility of tropical storms. Mexico City is best visited between March to May; winter brings cool temperatures, whilst June to October can be more humid with a daily short burst of showers.
