The Algarve / Vila Vita Parc

The Algarve in its purest form is found at this full-on destination-resort, that has everything from golf programmes to fantastic family facilities... oh and impeccable Michelin-starred dining.

Meandering around the cobbled walkways highlights the convivial-village-meets-sub-tropical-gardens atmosphere of this clifftop hamlet, making it the kind of place lingering sun-seekers are loathe to leave. But trust us, tearing yourself away from the glorious Algarve coast is worth it, especially to the resort’s rural wine estate only one hour inland. The homely and organic Herdade dos Grous estate is where the magic of Vila Vita’s gastronomy is shaped, inviting inquisitive foodies to explore the working farm and tour the extensive vineyards on horseback.

Back at the resort, the produce has its time to shine in ten incomparable-to-each-other restaurants; serving up an amalgamation of Mediterranean, Japanese and Portuguese dishes (to name a few). Where epicureans enjoy their fare is just as important; whether in an Arab-influenced grill, chilled out by the beach or tasting fine wine in the arched wine cellar. And when food comas kick in, they look to the smart, pale faced abodes inspired by the coast and with accents of Moorish heritage for a digestif overlooking the bay or vivid gardens.

Travel notes:

  • 203 elegant rooms and suites; 5 private pool villas
  • 11 restaurants including Michelin-starred Ocean
  • A total of 7 swimming pools, 3 of them for kids
  • Spa by Sisley Paris inspired by the region’s sea caves
  • One of the only resorts in the Algarve to have direct access to a secluded sandy white beach (locally known as Tremoços Beach)

Home-grown tastes

The impressive restaurants and bars here are supplied with fine vintages and fresh organically grown produce from their own wine estate and working farm. Surrounded by 700 hectares of countryside, Herdade Dos Grous - which represents the current pioneering spirit of Portugal's winegrowing business like no other estate - is a one hour drive inland. Explore the vineyard on horseback then sample tasters of the farm's delicacies. Wine tastings and pairings are available in the arched wine cellar back at the resort, located 26 feet below ground.

When to visit Portugal

Southern Portugal including the Algarve enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild winters. July and August are hot but temperatures are moderated by sea breezes. A good time to visit Portugal is May to June and September to October, where days are pleasantly warm and sunny.
