Tenerife / Bahía del Duque

Watch video

Comprehensive doesn’t even come close to describing this pastel pink resort. Complete with streets and squares and twirling turrets, it feels more like a fairy tale town.

It’s strange, how a place modelled on a 19th century Spanish colonial village can feel intimate, yet somehow Bahía del Duque manages. One of Tenerife’s original luxury resorts, they’ve hit the sweet spot with a whimsical crowd-pleasing escape that doesn’t sacrifice on individualised service. Expect to leave on a first name basis with most of the charming staff and feeling like you’ve discovered a home-away-from-home on the shores of the Atlantic.

Travel notes:

  • 346 rooms, 58 suites and 40 villas across Bahia del Duque, Casas Ducales and Las Villas
  • 21 restaurants, bars and lounges
  • The contemporary Bahia Wellness Retreat offers treatments from a thalassotherapy circuit and hot lava stone massages to fully immersive 10 day bespoke programmes
  • Duqui Club employs a team of entertainers for toddlers while the Teen Lounge is a cool Californian-inspired hangout
  • Ideal for those who like to wander, a key draw is the beach – Playa del Duque is one of the quietest in the area, with golden rather than black volcanic sand and a promenade with swanky stores and waterfront cafés. Alternatively there's LA Caleta town a 30 minute walk in the opposite direction

A sense of place

Quick airport transfers, easy beach access, strolling distance of nearby shopping and just ten minutes from two golf courses mean Bahía often tops the list for best location in south Tenerife. Inside the resort, things are just as carefully considered. When setting out to create something so vast, designer Pascua Ortega divided its accommodation into three distinct areas: vibrant rooms and suites, a horseshoe of exclusive Casas Ducales congregated around the pools, and finally, tucked away behind their own reception, Las Villas offer the utmost privacy.

In pursuit of…

…an authentic Canarian experience. Everything here is an ode to Spain’s cultural and historical heritage. Each turreted, turmeric-hued building represents an architectural landmark from the country’s past. While in the reception, traditionally suited-and-booted bellboys buzz around greeting new arrivals with broad smiles, eager to ensure a seamless taste of customary Canarian life while maintaining the hotel’s world-class status.

"One of Tenerife’s original luxury resorts, they’ve hit the sweet spot with a crowd-pleasing escape that doesn’t sacrifice on individualised service."

Beyond family-friendly

No child-friendly stone is left unturned here. Five pools for family splashing sessions strategically dotted throughout the resort, and enthusiastic entertainers at the kids’ club leading treasure hunts around Bahía’s paths and bridges, leaves no time for boredom. And, when all the playing is over and a good pamper session is in order, the range of petite wellness rituals in the spa mean little ones can experience their first massage while parents, or grandparents, cherish a long overdue one.

Wake up here

Tucked away in their own private area, Las Villas at Bahia are clustered in their own enclave away from the hub of activity in its centre. Bright spaces with private pools, Bang & Olufsen entertainment systems, enormous basalt stone baths and personal butlers, they enjoy all the autonomy and luxury of villa living with the impeccable hotel service Bahía has built its name on.

On location

Similar to a real village, there’s no shortage of bar or restaurant options – a dizzying 21 in fact – staving off the potential monotony that may accompany browsing the same menu each night. For succulent sole meunière and silky lobster risotto, La Brasserie boasts views across the pool and a menu curated by double Michelin-starred Chef Pierre Résimont. Elsewhere the beach club offers laid-back lunches on its tangerine-stained terrace over the ocean.

A Carrier curation

An under-the-radar whale watching spot, Tenerife’s shores are graced by different species throughout the year and there’s no better vantage point for viewings than from on board Pampano yacht. Intersperse cruising around the neighbouring islands in search of families of whales and dolphins, with snorkelling in the warm waters of the Atlantic and sunset drinks on deck.

When to visit Spain

Mainland Spain’s climate varies from temperate in the north to dry and hot in the south. Spring and autumn are pleasant and warm whereas July and August are hot, particularly inland. In Mallorca sunshine and warm temperatures are the norm from April to October with the cooling influence of the sea preventing excessive temperatures during the peak summer months, winters are mild and dry with occasional showers. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are year-round destinations, the climate being constantly warm for most of the year with July and August being hot.
