Maldives / The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort

This architectural masterpiece pays homage to the fragile ecology that surrounds it. Cleverly balancing daring design, while being respectful of tradition and local craftsmanship.

A wander around this hedonist’s hideout unearths striking structures around every corner, each telling its own unique story. This is a place where you’ll find villas inspired by the graceful form of manta rays, or the fisherman’s hut that was first discovered on Vommuli. Others are reminiscent of the Maldivian dhoni that sail these waters – either set on the rocky shoals, or with vaulted sail-like roofs. There’s a spiral shell-shaped library and observatory tower; the Iridium Spa is designed like a crustacean and has treatment rooms over water in each of the pincers; while The Whale Bar’s distinctive arched shape recalls the majestic whale shark.

Venturing inland, you’ll find Vommuli House – a discovery centre for families. Its branching form is based on banyan trees and each ‘branch’ holds within it a different recreation – from playroom, to culinary school, to yoga studio. Rest assured, all the ever-familiar St. Regis hallmarks are here – the butlers, the champagne sabrage ceremonies, and even a Maldivian take on the classic Bloody Mary, renamed Island Mary and served in a seashell of course.

Travel notes:

  • 44 villas over water; 33 villas on the beach
  • The lesser-known southern Dhaalu Atoll is relatively undeveloped and the marine life is abundant
  • Bentley transfers for guests of Two-Bedroom Beach Suites, Caroline Astor Estate and John Jacob Astor Estate
  • For day trips, charter Norma, an Azimut Flybridge 66 cruiser
  • A Michelin Chef Series sees culinary creations by world-renowned chefs every month

When is the best time to visit Maldives?

The Maldives has a hot, tropical climate with sunshine all year round. The most popular months to visit are between November and April during the north-east monsoon when it is dry with very little wind. Whilst there may be rain during some of the summer months, with ever-changing weather patterns and excellent offers, this is becoming an increasingly popular time to travel.
